Vestibular Rehabilitation

Dizziness, spinning, falling, motion sickness, wooziness, nausea, vertigo, feeling "off balance"....

If you have experienced any of these symptoms, you may have vestibular (inner ear) disorder, the number one cause for dizziness and vertigo.

Located in the inner ear, the vestibular system is comprised of a left side and right side which normally work together to give information to the brain regarding body movement and head movement. In a vestibular disorder, both sides do not work together and dizziness results.

Vestibular Rehabilitation
is an exercise-based approach to the treatment of symptoms associated with vestibular disorders. The goals are to

  • Decrease dizziness
  • Improve balance
  • Increase general activity levels A thorough evaluation is done by the therapist to determine area of weakness, set goals for the patient and establish appropriate exercises.

A home exercise program may be provided to maximize recovery and prevent recurring symptoms.

    Fall Prevention
A patient who suffers from imbalance due to poor eyesight, poor sensation in the feet or weak leg muscles may need vestibular rehabilitation for fall prevention. The therapist may recommend strengthening and balance exercises, assistive devices and/or home safety tips to prevent falling and keep the individual independent and safe.

If you think you may have a vestibular disorder, contact your physician. You may be a candidate for vestibular rehabilitation. For more information on the program, call 239 278-7700.
